How to Make DIY Yarn Balls
How to Make DIY Yarn Balls
I had loads of yarn from trying to learn to crochet and from knitting projects I never completed so I decided to use it for these wonderful yarn craft balls. These DIY Yarn balls are super easy to make and add the perfect decorative touch to your home decor. They are so easy and inexpensive to make that you can make them to coincide with your decor or to liven up your home for the holidays. I chose to use autumn colors for my yarn balls because it is that Thanksgiving time of year around our house but you could choose any colors you like. You can place them in a bowl as year round decorations or hang them on a line as party decor. Either way, I just love how these yarn balls look in my home and I know you will too.
What you will Need:
- Balloons
- Yarn of various colors
- Mod Podge
- Cooking Spray
- Bowl
- Small Sponge paint brush
- Scissors
- Tweezers
- Drop cloth
- Rubber gloves
Step 1: How to Make DIY Yarn Balls
Blow up balloons to different sizes and knot each balloon.Spry them with cooking spray. This will help the yarn release in a later step. I learned this the hard way.
Step 2: How to Make DIY Yarn Balls
Place the Mod Podge into the bowl.
Step 3: How to Make DIY Yarn Balls
Dip the yarn into the Mod Podge and gently squeeze out the excess. You can run the yarn through the Mod Podge as you go but I found this to be very messy so I used a small sponge paint brush to paint on the Mod Podge instead. Either way you will want to use rubber gloves for this project or risk ruining your manicure. I would also recommend that you pre-measure your yarn for each ball as working with a skein or ball of yarn is fidgity. I ultimately wrapped yarn around my balloons dry to estimate the amount of yarn I would need to make things easier for me.
Step 4: How to Make DIY Yarn Balls
Beginning at the knot-end of your balloon, wrap your balloon with the wet yarn. The more you wrap, the denser the ball will be. Wrap the balloon in all directions. You definitely want it to look random. Cut the yarn when you have finished getting the density that you want. I tucked the end under another piece of yarn so it would not be obvious. Put another layer of Mod Podge over the entire ball.
Step 5: How to Make DIY Yarn Balls
Let the balloons dry completely for 24 hours. The yarn should be stiff and dry.
Step 6: How to Make DIY Yarn Balls
Knead the balloon a little to separate it from the dried yarn. Pop the balloon. Pull out the balloon using tweezers. If for some reason the ball collapses in spots inflate a new balloon inside the ball to push it back into place then remove the balloon again.
Step 7: How to Make DIY Yarn Balls
You have finished your DIY yarn balls and can decorate your home in any way you like.
