How to Make a Small Zippered Wallet

This simple small zippered wallet is a fun and functional sewing project. It is great for holding a few credit cards, bills and coins. Just toss it into your purse and head off. As those of you who follow Sew Very Crafty you will know that I am a baseball fanatic. Nowadays, you cannot bring a purse into the stadium or to concerts. What you will Need: How to Make a Small Zippered Wallet

• Outer and Lining Fabrics
• 8″ Zipper
• Pellon SF101 Interfacing
• Standard Sewing Supplies

Step 2: Cut the Fabrics

Cut two outer and two lining pieces that measure 5 5/8″ x 4 3/4″. Then cut an outer and lining piece that measure 9 7/8″ x 4″. Finally cut two lining pieces that measure 4 3/4″ x 13 1/2″. From the interfacing cut two pieces that measures 4 3/4″ x 4″, one piece that measures 9 1/8″ x 3 1/4″ and two that measures 3 5/8″ x 12 1/4″.

Step 3: Trim the Interfacing

From the 4 3/4″ x 4″ piece of interfacing place a mark on the long side 3/4″ from the edge and 3/4″ down from the top. Join the two marks drawing a curved line. Place the two pieces wrong sides together and trim the second interfacing piece to match the first.

Step 4: Fuse the Interfacing

Place the small interfacing pieces to the wrong side of each of the two small outer pieces using a hot iron and following the manufacturer's instructions. Fuse the long interfacing pieces to the wrong side of the long lining pieces. Next, fuse the final piece of interfacing to the wrong side of the outer fabric piece.

Step 5: Trim all of the small pieces

Place the small outer pieces right sides together with the small lining pieces. Trim the curved corners so that there is a 1/4″ seam allowance.

Step 6: Prepare the Pockets

Measure 5 3/8″ down from the short end along the long edge and make a mark. Fold the piece right sides together at the mark and press. Turn the piece over and measure down 1 3/4″ from the fold. Mark. Fold the piece at that mark and press. Measure up 2 1/4″ from the fold and make a mark. Fold the piece over on that mark and press. Measure down 1 3/4″ from the fold and press. Fold the remaining fabric over and press. Clip. Repeat for the second long piece. Stitch along the sides and bottom using a 5/8″ seam allowance leaving an opening for turning. Clip the corners and turn right sides out. Press.

Step 7: Attach the Pockets

Place the pockets onto the right side of the small lining pieces making sure they are 3/4″ from the bottom and straight side. Stitch the pockets to the small pieces along the sides and bottom.

Step 8: add the Zipper

Measure the small outer piece 5/8″ from the non curved edge and make a mark. Measure 5/8″ up from the bottom of the curved edge and mark. Unzip the zipper. Fold the top end of the zipper down on the wrong side. Place that end onto the first 5/8″ mark and clip. Put the other end of the zipper on the second 5/8″ mark. Clip the zipper tape so that it easily goes around the curve. Stitch the zipper to the outer piece. Take your time here. It can be a little fidgety. Add the corresponding lining piece right sides together so that the zipper is in the center and stitch to the zipper. Turn right sides out. Repeat the entire process for the other side of the zipper. Topstitch along both sides of the zipper.

Step 9: Stitch the Wallet

Place the outer pieces right sides together and the lining pieces right sides together. Stitch the pieces together using a 3/8″ seam allowance. Turn right sides out. Fold the raw edges in and clip. Stitch using a 1/4″ seam allowance.

Step 10: Create the Coin Pocket

Fold the outer and lining pieces in half right sides together. Stitch along the short ends using a 5/8″ seam allowance. open the seams and press. Turn the lining piece right sides out. Place the lining piece inside the outer piece so that the pieces are right sides together. Stitch all the way around. Turn both pieces right sides out and push the lining into the outer piece. Stitch around the top. Pull out the lining. Fold the outer raw edges in and press. Repeat for the lining piece. Push the lining back into the outer piece. Stitch the pieces together all the way around.

Press the piece down so that the seam is on the end. Measure in from each edge 1″ on both the top and bottom and mark. Fold the pocket piece on those marks. Clip. Stitch along the top from the end to the fold. Then, stitch on each end without stitching over the fold.

Step 11: Add the Coin Pocket

Take the wallet. Measure from the end of the zipper along the bottom 3/16″ on both sides. Mark. Place the folded edge of the coin pocket on one mark and the other folded edge on the other mark. Clip. Topstitch along the edges to secure. You have now finished your small zippered wallet.
