How to Make an Autumn Sunflower Door Hanger

Once again I have been going through my stash. I really do need to get it down. I came across all of the items I used in this project. Unbelievable really. I guess if you stock up on random things you may be able to make something with it. Needless to say I decided to make this Autumn Sunflower Door Hanger. Another beginner crafting project that came out better than I anticipated. What you will Need: How to Make an Autumn Sunflower Door Hanger

Step 1: Paint the Wood Round

Remove the twine hanger from the wood round. Do not fill the holes. You will need the holes later. Paint the entire wood round white. I used white chalk paint for this. You only need one coat since it is ultimately going to be covered.

Step 2: Tape off the Wood Round

Measure down 3″ from the top and bottom and place some painters or masking tape. Use a lot of pressure or a brayer in order to get crisp lines.

Step 3: Paint the Center

Paint the center a dark orange fall color. Remove the tape and let dry completely. I mixed some orange and red chalk paint for the color I used. It looks a bit red but there are orange undertones that I like.

Step 4: Add the Mod Podge

Add Mod Podge to the top and bottom of the wood round.

Step 5: Add the Paper

The technique for this part of the project depends on the paper you are using. I had some cardstock that I purchased at 12″ x 12″ cardstock shop so I layered the paper on the wood round ends while the Mod Podge was still wet. If you are using a thinner paper, I recommend that you let the Mod Podge dry first. Layer the paper on top and iron it with an iron to make sure there are no creases. Regardless of the paper you use, once it is dry add another layer of Mod Podge on top to seal it in.

Step 6: Paint the wood biscuits

I started by waiting the biscuits with mustard chalk paint. I added some of the center color to the sides of the biscuits using a dry brush technique. Once the paint has dried add some distress oxide to age the pieces just a bit. Paint four of the biscuits with green paint and when dry add the distress oxide.

Step 7: Paint the Autumn sign

I had a package of small autumn wood signs. I chose to use the one that says Welcome Fall. Paint the wood sign black and let it dry. While you are at it, paint the small wood round black as well.

Step 8: Add the Wood biscuits

Draw a small circle in the center of the orange part of the wood round. Place six wood biscuits all the way around and adhere them with hot glue and wood glue. Once they are set, add another layer of wood biscuits on top in between the first set of biscuits. Again glue with hot glue and wood glue. Next, repeat this process on each side but use three biscuits on the bottom and two on top. This will look like a half of a sunflower.

Step 9: Add the Flower Center

Step 9: Add the Rope and Leaves

Cut a piece of rope and glue it to the project to look like the stem of the sunflower. Once the stem has been added glue the green biscuits to act as leaves.

Step 9: Add the Autumn Sign

Using hot glue add the wood sign on the top of the wood round inside the paper part.

Step 10: Add the Hanger

Create two large knots by tying two knots and cutting the ends off to leave just the knot. Hot glue the knot to the front at the top. Add a matching piece of rope to the back to match the location of the knots.
