How to Make Denim Feathers
My husband had some jeans he was going to throw out o I decided to do some up cycling projects with them. The first project I did were these denim feathers. This is a super simple craft project that anyone can make. They are perfect for embellishing a handbag, backpack or even your hair. This is also a kid friendly project a well. If you would like more denim upcycling projects check out my previous post here.
For this project I used an old pair of jeans and a piece of twine. You will also need a sewing machine and a seam ripper or stiletto. That is it. I added a couple f beads to enhance my feathers but those are optional.
What you will Need: How to Make Denim Feathers
- Denim
- Twine
- Beads (Optional)
- Standard sewing supplies
- Seam Ripper
Step 1: Cut your Denim
I used an old pair of jeans for my project and simply cut out a feather shape. I also cut a piece of twine a little longer than my feather shape so that I could add the beads.
Step 2: Stitch the Twine
Place the twine down the center of the denim and zigzag stitch it into place.
Step 3: Pull out the Threads from the Feathers
From the side of the denim and using your seam ripper for stiletto begin pulling the long way fibers away from the width wise fibers. This will leave the width wise fibers in place and the length wise fibers will e completely removed. Continue doing this until you reach the twine in the center then repeat for the other side. Once you have removed the fibers from both sides of the twine you have created your denim feather.
Step 4: Add the Beads to the Feathers
Add the beads to the twine and tie. You have now completed your denim feathers.
