How to Make Hanging Dish Towels
How to Make Hanging Dish Towels
I love hanging dish towels. I have several that I use but have seen better days. It is time for new ones so I thought I would create this fun and functional hanging dish towel pattern and tutorial and share it with you. I also decided to do a companion video to go along with this tutorial so you can head over to Youtube and take a look. This is a beginner sewing project that anyone with basic sewing skills can sew. Although it requires a buttonhole I know you can do it. In
For this project I used some dishtowels that I purchased a while back for another project and thought they would be perfect for this. I also used some cotton fabrics I had on hand that I purchased at JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores for the hangers. You could use some patterned fabrics but I wanted to stick with solids for mine. You could head over to Hobby Lobby, Fabric.com or onlinefabricstore.net to get exactly what you need for this project. Step 1: Cut your fabrics
Using the pattern piece cut two fabric pieces and one interfacing piece.
Step 2: fuse the interfacing
Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of one of the pattern pieces using a hot iron and following the manufacturers instructions.
Step 3: Stitch the hanger
Place the two hanger pieces right sides together and stitch from the bottom all the way around the top to the other side leaving the bottom open. Clip the curves. Turn right sides out and press.
Step 4: Add the buttonhole
Once you have pressed the hanger piece add the buttonhole. You will measure the size of your button and create a button hole according to your machine’s instructions at the tongue part of the hanger piece as shown.
Step 5: fold your dish towel
Cut your dish towel in half. Fold the towel so that it measures 6″ widthwise. Press.
Step 6: Add Your Dish Towel
Fold under the raw edges of the hanger by about 1/2″ and press. Insert the folded edge of the towel into the opening and pin. Top stitch two lines along the hanger edge to secure the hanger to the towel.
Step 7: Add the Button
Fold over the tongue piece until it meets the bottom to the hanger. Mark the location of the button through the buttonhole using an erasable pen. Sew in the button and you have finished your hanging dish towel.
