How to Start a Basic Blog in 20 Minutes or Less
If you have ever thought about starting a basic blog this post is for you. You can start a basic blog in 20 minutes or less using GoDaddy. GoDaddy is the world’s largest domain registrar and has award winning customer service that is perfect for the new blogger. The hardest part of starting a blog with GoDaddy is choosing your domain name. Otherwise there are four basic steps to starting your blog that will take 20 minutes or less to complete. No experience is necessary. If you are interested in the real cost of starting a blog read my post The Real Cost of Starting a Blog. You will learn about the real costs of starting a successful blog.
Step 1: Choosing a Domain Name
Head over to GoDaddy by clicking the link and choose your domain name. GoDaddy allows you to search for the domain of your choice. Assuming you have some idea what you want your domain name to be the process of finding a domain name should take you 5 minutes or so. Just punch in your choice in the search box and GoDaddy will tell you whether it is taken or not. Continue searching until you find one that you want and sign up. The cost is minimal. You can learn all about the real cost of starting a blog here.
Step 2: Upload WordPress
The next step is to log onto your GoDaddy website and upload WordPress. WordPress is free and takes about 10 minutes to upload to your site. Once you are on your site you simply need to click on “Web Hosting” and then “Manage.” Under “Options and Settings” in the “Popular Apps” setting, click WordPress then click install. Complete the on screen prompts and click OK. Select your Domain name and enter the directory where you want to install WordPress. If you want the domain name itself to use WordPress, the directory field should be left blank. Finally, enter an Administrator Name, Password (and its confirmation), an Email Address and the Blog Title. WordPress will be installed to your hosting account with the options you selected within 24 hours. It generally takes about 10 minutes. When it’s complete, you’ll receive a confirmation email.
Step 3: Choose a Theme
WordPress comes with many free themes that you can upload and activate with a few clicks in minutes by going to the “Appearance Tab” then clicking on themes. The downside to using these free themes is that they have limited features, may not have all of the things that you want your readers to see and are often not updated or supported. You can see a full array of free themes at WordPress.org.
When I was searching for a theme for my own blog I wanted something that was a little more feminine and had more features than the free themes and I came across Pretty Darn Cute Design. They had exactly what I was looking for. I found a theme that had all of the features that I wanted in a blog as well as the colorful, feminine design I craved.
My Adorable theme is a theme based on the Genesis platform so I had to purchase both the Genesis platform from Studio Press and the Adorable theme from Pretty Darn Cute. I paid less than $100 for both and have been very happy with my purchase. You can also purchase a variety of Genesis themes directly from Studio press that range from professional to artsy to frilly like mine. I highly recommend both the Genesis platform through Studio Press and Pretty Darn Cute Design for looks, ease of use, professionalism and support. Support is important to those just starting out and the stock themes do not come with any.
