How to Make a Patchwork Christmas Stocking
I love to make Christmas stockings and this year I thought I would make some patchwork Christmas Stockings from Christmas fabric remnants that I had in my stash. The rest will be used to make a super easy Christmas table runner that any non-quilter such as myself can make. You will be amazed at how simple this project is to put together using just what you have on hand but if you need fabrics for this project head over to Hobby Lobby or Fabric.com to get exactly what you need for your patchwork Christmas Stockings.
I used 5 different fabrics for my stockings but you can use as many as you would like. I had a little bit extra of one particular fabric so I used that for the lining of my stocking. You could also use patchwork for the lining if you want to run through your stash but I find that having a sold fabric for the lining is easier to work with. So let’s get started.
What you will Need:
- Pattern you can get here
- 5 different fabric remnants or fat quarters
- 1/2 yd lining fabric
- 1/2 yd fusible interfacing like pellon 808 for structure
- 1/4 yd Ribbon for hanging loop (Optional)
Step 1: How to Make a Patchwork Christmas Stocking
Cut your fabrics in 3″ x 10″ strips or the width that you would like for your stocking.
Step 2: How to Make a Patchwork Christmas Stocking
Sew the strips together along the long edges using a 1/4″ seam allowance. Press the seams to one side. Repeat for the other side. You should have two rectangles of pieced fabric.
Step 3: How to Make a Patchwork Christmas Stocking
Place the pattern on the patchwork piece you just made and cut around it. Cut out an identical piece of interfacing and lining fabric. Turn the pattern over and cut another piece of patchwork fabric interfacing and lining.
Step 4: How to Make a Patchwork Christmas Stocking
Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of the matching patchwork pieces according to the manufacturers instructions. This is a simple process that requires only a hot iron. The interfacing has a glue side and a non glue side. Place the glue side to the wrong side of the piece and press the piece with the hot iron and the glue will melt fusing the interfacing to the fabric so that can now be treated as one.
Step 5: How to Make a Patchwork Christmas Stocking
With right sides together sew the two patchwork pieces together leaving the top of the stocking open. Turn right side out. Repeat for the lining pieces but leave a 5″ opening in the lining so that you will be able to turn the stocking right sides out in a later step. Leave the lining wrong side out.
Step 6: How to Make a Patchwork Christmas Stocking
With right sides together sew one of your 3″ x 10″ strips in half lengthwise. Turn right sides out. Press so that the seam is in the center. Top stitch on each side of the strip. This will be the hanger for the stocking.
Step 7: How to Make a Patchwork Christmas Stocking
Place the patchwork piece inside the lining piece so that the right sides are together. Place the hanger or a loop of ribbon at the back of the stocking in between the lining and the patchwork piece so that the raw edges line up with the raw edges of the fabric and the loop is facing inside the stocking. Sew around the top of the stocking using a 1/4″ seam allowance.
Step 8: How to Make a Patchwork Christmas Stocking
Pull the patchwork piece through the opening you left in the lining so that both pieces are right sides out. Sew the opening in the lining closed using ladder stitch. Push the Lining into the patchwork piece and press. Top stitch around the rim of the stocking for a more professional look and you have now completed your patchwork Christmas Stocking.
Step 9: How to Make a Patchwork Christmas Stocking
Hang your stocking.
