How to Make a Small Dollar Tree Curio Cabinet

Once again I am trying to use all of my Dollar Tree Stash so I decided to put together this simple to make Dollar Tree curio cabinet. This project came together quickly and I love how it came out. Almost everything in this project came from Dollar Tree. I know that Dollar Tree is discontinuing much of their craft supplies so I will try to source these elsewhere. Nevertheless, this is a really fun craft project to make. You can display your small items beautifully in this small curio cabinet.

What you will Need: How to Make a Small Dollar Tree Curio Cabinet

Step 1: Glue the Crates

Place some wood glue and hot glue on the long sides of the crates. Glue two crates together. Repeat for the second pair of crates. Clamp the pieces together letting the glue set. Add wood glue and hot glue to the short ends of the glued crates and glue the two pieces together. Clamp them together letting the glue set. You should have a large box for sections.

Step 2: Paint the Wood Piece

I used the brown paint as stain by covering the wood parts of the piece with brown paint and wiping the paint off using a baby wipe. This gave a stained look.

Step 3: Cut two Pieces of Wood

Take one of the shelves and trace the narrow bottom onto the wood piece. Repeat for the second shelf. Cut the wood along the lines you traced using either a miniature table saw or a hand miter saw.

Step 4: Paint the Shelves

I painted the shelves black for a little contrast. You may need several coats for good coverage. You could also spray paint them.

Step 5: Glue the Wood to the Shelves

Using hot glue and wood glue attach the wood pieces you just cut onto the bottom of the each shelf.

Step 6: Glue the wood box to the shelves

Once again, using hot glue and wood glue attach one end of the box you previously created to the bottom of one of the shelves. Repeat for the other end of the box and second shelf.

Step 7: Cut the Acrylic Boards

Measure the acrylic boards to fit your cabinet. I used four acrylic boards and cut them each ___” x ___”. I wanted the boards to meet along the seams of the crates. Be careful cutting the acrylic boards. Leave the opaque cover on the boards while cutting to help prevent splintering. Again, you can use a small table saw or a hand miter saw.

Step 8: Attach the Acrylic Boards

Using the hinges that came in the kit attach the acrylic boards to the wood crates using hot glue and wood glue. I attached mine to the center of one side of the acrylic board and to the center of one side of each crate. Repeat this until all four hinges and boards are attached. You have the option of cutting the heads off the screws that came with the hinges and gluing them in the holes for a more authentic look.

Add the acrylic doors

Step 9: Attach the Latch

Using hot glue attach one half of the latch on one side of two acrylic boards. This will join two of the boards together vertically. Next, add the other half of the latch to the other two acrylic boards. Make sure that you measure so that the latch will close in the center. Once the latch has been added you have finished your small Dollar Tree curio cabinet. Fill and enjoy.
