Learn to Sew a Toilet Paper Holder
Storing your toilet paper can be problematic especially in a small bathroom. So I thought I would create a toilet paper holder for the bathroom. You can find these in stores but they don’t necessarily match your home’s decor. With this tutorial you can make one in minutes using fabrics that you actually want. This is a beginner sewing project that anyone can make. You don’t need anything but fabric and a sewing machine to create this terrific little toilet paper holder.
I used home decorator weight fabric that matched the color scheme in my bathroom for the exterior. I purchased this fabric at JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores ages ago and I had the lining fabric on hand. The lining is just a plain white cotton. You could head over to Hobby Lobby, Fabric.com or Onlinefabricstore.net to get exactly what you need for your toilet paper holder. What you will Need: Learn to Sew a Toilet Paper Holder
- 1/4 yd outer decorator weight fabric
- 1/4 yd lining fabric
- Standard sewing supplies
Step 1: Cut your fabrics
Cut one outer piece and one lining piece that measures 5.5″ x 17 1/2″ on the fold. Cut two pieces of outer fabric that measure 2″ x 7″ for the hangers.
Step 2: Create the hangers
To create the hangers fold the raw edges to the centers lengthwise and press. Fold in half and press again. Topstitch along both sides. You should have two hangers.
Step 3: Create the toilet paper holder
Place the outer piece and the lining piece right sides together. Stitch together using a 1/4″ seam allowance all the way around leaving an opening on one side for turning. Clip the corners without clipping through the stitching. Turn right sides out through the opening and press. Topstitch all the way around the holder making sure to enclose the opening along the way.
Step 4: add the hangers
Fold the holder in half lining sides together. Place the hangers between the halves at the top of the toilet paper holder 1″ from each edge and pin. Stitch the hangers to the holder through all layers back stitching to hold them secure.
Step 5: Sew the divider
Measure up 8 1/2″ from the bottom and stitch a line through all layers. Place one roll of toilet paper in the bottom rung and one in the top and hang up in your bathroom.
