This double zipper makeup bag is a fun and functional sewing project. It is an intermediate sewing project but a strong beginner could give it a try. I love the look of this bag and the inset zipper pouch is a nice touch. It is a great size for everything that you need. This makeup bag is great for home or for travel. With the inset zipper pouch you really have three compartments for all of your stuff with this bag.
I used a nice cotton fabric for the exterior and lining for this makeup bag that I purchased at JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores but you will find a nice selection at Fabric.com and onlinefabricstore.net for your bag. - 1/2 yd lining fabric
- 1 10″ zipper
- 1 8″ zipper
- 1/2 yd Pellon SF 101 Interfacing
Step 1: Cut Fabrics
1 outer and 1 lining that measures 15 3/4″ x 12 5/8″
2 interfacing that measure 15″ x 11 7/8″
1 outer piece that measures 2″ x 2 1/2″

2 outer pieces and lining pieces that measure 5″ x 8 3/8″
4 Interfacing pieces that measure 4 3/8″ x 7 1/2″
Step 2: Fuse the Interfacing
Fuse the interfacing to the corresponding outer and lining pieces using a hot iron and following the manufacturers instructions.
Step 3: Create the Inset Pocket
Take the outer and lining pieces that measure 5″ x 8 3/8″ and the 8″ zipper and place them on your work table. Take one outer piece and place it right sides up. Place the zipper right sides down on the outer piece. Then place a lining piece right sides down on the zipper creating a zipper sandwich. Stitch the zipper using a zipper foot. Turnt he piece right side out and topstitch along the zipper . Repeat the process using the remaining pouch pieces and the other side of the zipper. Place the outer sides right sides together and the lining sides right sides together matching the raw edges. Stitch the bottoms using a 3/8″ seam allowance but leave the sides open. Turn the pouch right sides out. Stitch the sides using a 1/4″ seam allowance. Set aside.
Step 4: Add the Zipper Tab
Take the 2″ x 2 1/2″ outer piece and fold the long edges to the center and press. Fold the short edges to the center and press. Open up the tab and place a short end right sides together with the end of the 10″ zipper. Stitch along the fold that you created. Fold in the sides toward the wrong side of the zipper. Fold the whole tab to the wrong side and turn the raw edge under the folded sides. Stitch all the way around the tab to secure. Hand stitch the ears of the zipper to the wrong side.
Step 5: Create the Zipper Side Panels
Take the 2 1/2″ x 8 5/8″ outer pieces and fold each side in by 1/2″ and press. Fold in half lengthwise and press again.
Step 6: Add the Zipper Side Panels
Open the long edges of the panels. Place the zipper 1/4″ from the right side raw edge of one of the panels with one of the folded short edges at the raw end of the zipper. Stitch the zipper to the panel. Fold the panel to the wrong side of the zipper and fold under the raw edge. Attach the now folded edge to the zipper and stitch along the sort edges and along the zipper edge. Repeat with the other panel on the other side of the zipper. Draw a line using an erasable pen down each panel so that they are 1 1/4″ apart.
Step 7: Add the Zipper
Take the 15 3/4″ x 12 5/8″ outer piece and measure in 2 1/2″ on each side of the short ends. Place one side of the zipper panel between the two marks on one end right sides together. Stitch along the line that you drew on the panel. Repeat for the other end and the other side of the zipper. Place the lining piece so that it is right sides together with the outer piece with the zipper panel in the center. Stitch along the previous stitching. Repeat for the other end but leave an opening for turning the bag in a later step.
Step 8: Cut out the Corners
Place the lining half right sides together and the outer half right sides together Make sure that the center seams are aligned. Cut out 2″ squares from the outer and lining bottom corners.
Step 9: Add the Inset Pocket
Place the Inset pocket inside the lining 3/8″ from the cut bottom edge. Stitch along the entire side using a 3/8″ seam allowance. Stitch along the other outer side of the bag also using a 3/8″ seam allowance. Pull the other side of the inset pocket to the other side of the lining also 3/8″ above the cut bottom edge. Stitch along the lining side securing the inset pocket.
Step 10: Box the Corners
Box the corners by matching the side seam to the bottom creating a straight line. Stitch along the line using a 3/8″ seam allowance. Do this for all four corners.
Step 11: Turn Right Sides Out
Turn the bag right sides out through the opening you left previously. Topstitch around the top of the bag enclosing the opening.
Step 12: Stitch the Sides
Pinch the sides of the bag around the inset pocket. Measure 2 1/2″ from the top along the side and mark using an erasable pen. Measure in 1/4″ from the side and draw a line to the 2 3/4″ mark. Stitch along the line. Repeat for the other side. Pinch the outer sides and stitch along the side 1/2″ to delineate the sides. Do this for all four sides. You have now finished your double zipper makeup bag.
