How to Make a Woven Heart Pouch
I love these Scandinavian woven heart pouches. They are a simple but elegant craft that is perfect for Valentines treats and other surprises. They are so simple to make that you can make them for yourself or with your kids. You can make them from paper or felt and from any colors you want. The traditional Julehjerter or woven heart pouch is made from red and white and is a Christmas decoration but I have made several and chosen all different colors for this Valentine’s season. For my woven heart pouches I chose to use a stiff felt that I got at my local craft store but you could choose to use paper as well. The process for making them is the same.
What you will Need:
- Pattern
- Felt or paper in different colors – 9″ x 12″ felt or 8 1/2″ x 11″ paper
- Scissors
- Hot Glue
Step 1: How to Make a Woven Heart Pouch
Print out the pattern. Fold your felt or paper in half and place the pattern on the fold. Cut out the pattern. You will need two identical pieces of two different colors. Cut out a rectangle that measures 1″ x 8″ to be used as a handle.

Step 2: How to Make a Woven Heart Pouch
You will notice that you have two pieces that are identical except for the color. Each of the pieces have a rounded end and have a fold in the middle. Do not cut this fold it is important in creating these heart pouches. You will now start weaving the hearts. First, place the whole the red leg in between the first white leg. Then, place the whole second white leg inside the red leg. Next, place the whole red leg into the third white leg and the fourth white leg into the third red leg. This completes the first row of weaving. You will push this row up so that you can move on to then next row.

Step 3: How to Make a Woven Heart Pouch
Since you started the first row with the red leg you will start the second row by placing the white leg into the red leg. You will move on to putting the red leg into the white leg then the white leg into the red leg and continue on alternating as you did the first row.

Step 4: How to Make a Woven Heart Pouch
Row 3 is completed the same as row one and row four is completed the same as row two. You have finished weaving your heart. You should be able to open the top of the heart and reach into the pouch that was created by the weaving.

Step 5: How to Make a Woven Heart Pouch
Hot glue the rectangle pieces to the “v” of the heart on the inside to act as a handle. Fill the pouch with goodies for a nice Valentine’s Day treat.
