I was asked to make some reversible padded chair back covers to fit four country style chairs so I thought I would make a short tutorial out of this project.  It was super easy to do and solved the problem of chairs scraping against a wall. Perhaps it will solve a similar problem for you.

What you will Need:

  • Pattern or make your own to fit your specific chairs
  • 1/2 yd. Exterior fabric per chair
  • 1/2 yd. Interior fabric per chair
  • 1 yd. Pellon flex foam
  • 1 yd Fusible fleece
  • Standard sewing supplies.

Step 1: Reversible Padded Chair Back Covers

Print out the attached pattern and tape page A to page B or create your own.  The best way to create your own pattern is by taking a large piece of paper and tracing the outline of your chair then adding additional ease for the thickness of the chair and a 1/4″ seam allowance.  In my project I traced the outline of the chair and added 3/4″ to that outline to cover the 1″ thickness of the chair and the 1/4″ seam allowance.  Keep in mind that you will be sewing together a front and a back so you will want the ease to be added 1/2″ to both sides for a total of 1″.

Step 2: Reversible Padded Chair Back Covers

Once you have your pattern, cut two pieces of the exterior and the interior fabrics for the front and the back as well as one piece of fleece and one piece of flex foam.  I found it best to fold the pattern in half and cut it on the fold so that both sides are even.

Step 3: Reversible Padded Chair Back Covers

Fuse the fleece onto the wrong side of one of the exterior pieces.  With right sides together place the two exterior pieces together with the flex foam on the wrong side of piece without the fleece.  Sew around the pieces leaving the bottom open.

Step 4: Reversible Padded Chair Back Covers

Turn the cover so that the padding is in between the two pieces of fabric. The exterior of your chair back cover is finished. Sew the two interior pieces of fabric right sides together with no fleece or foam in the same manner leaving the bottom open.

Step 5: Reversible Padded Chair Back Covers

With right sides together, place the exterior of the cover into the interior of the cover and sew the bottoms together leaving a 3″ opening for turning. Push the exterior fabric through the opening you left in the previous step. You should have two separate covers sewn together in the middle. Push the interior of the cover inside the exterior and press.

Step 6: Reversible Padded Chair Back Covers

Close the opening using mattress stitch then top stitch around the bottom of the cover for a finished look and you have completed your reversible padded chair back cover.
