Easy Winter Beret

This Easy Winter Beret is a fun a quick project for any beginner sewer and a terrific way to start children sewing for the first time.  It is fast and easy.  Truly instant gratification.  If you want this beret to be reversible leave off the flower embellishment.  You can head over to Fabric.com or Hobby Lobby to get everything you need for this project.  Fabric.com has an enormous selection of fabrics and notions that will make this project exactly what you want. This post contains affiliate links that if you click on them and make a purchase I may receive a small commission at no additional cost to you.

What you will Need:

• 1/2 yd. wool or felt like fabric
• 1/2 yd. cotton or silky type fabric for lining
• 1 12″ plate for measuring
• 1 6.5″ plate for measuring
• Standard sewing supplies

Step 1: Easy Winter Beret

Use the 12″ plate to draw two circles on both the exterior woolen type fabric and the lining fabric.  I chose 100% polyester velvet suede in grey because I had it in my stash and a red and grey cotton fabric for the lining.  Cut out all four circles.

Step 2: Easy Winter Beret

Use the 6.5″ plate and draw another circle in the center of one of the outer circles and the lining circles and cut so that it looks like a doughnut.  Next cut a rectangle of both fabrics that measures about 23″ x 2″ to use as the hat’s band.  These measurements fit me perfectly.  You should measure your head and change the center of the doughnut and the rectangle to fit your own head.

Step 3: Easy Winter Beret

With right sides together sew the outer edge of the doughnut to the outer edge of the circle on both the outer fabric and the lining.

Step 4: Easy Winter Beret

You should have two circles sewn together with one circle having a hole in it.  Sew the outer hat band together at the short ends and the lining hat band at the short ends so that you have two circles of fabric. One for the lining and one for the outer fabric.  Take the outer fabric band and place it right sides together with the outer beret matching the raw edges and stitch all the way around using a ¼” seam allowance.  Your beret is still wrong sides out at this point.  This will be the hat band. Repeat for the lining.

Step 5: Easy Winter Beret

Turn the hat made from the outer fabric right side out and place right sides together with the lining fabric just like you would do on a hand bag.  Sew the two hats together along the band leaving about a 3″ opening.

Step 6: Easy Winter Beret

Pull the outer hat through the opening in the lining then push the lining into the inside of the outer hat.

Step 7: Easy Winter Beret

After the lining is securely inside the hat, close the opening using ladder stitch for an invisible closure. You can embellish the hat any way you like but otherwise you have finished this  super easy winter project. I added a flower made of the same outer fabric and riveted it to the hat for a firm finish.
