What you will Need: How to Make a Dollar Tree Pumpkin Vase on a Wagon

Step 1: Cut off the Top of the Pumpkin

Believe it or not these pumpkins are hollow. In order to turn this into a vase I cut a hole in the top of the pumpkin the diameter of the cylinder vase I found at Dollar Tree.

Step 2: Paint the Pumpkin if you Want

I decided to paint one of my pumpkins using Folkart chalk paint. You can purchase an orange one but I did not like the orange it came in so I bought a white one and painted it. Once it was painted, I spattered white paint on the orange pumpkin and black on the white pumpkin. This was done by holding the end of the brush in my hand and hitting my wrist with the other hand. I kept the small pumpkin the same color but spattered it with a bit of black. Once the spatter was dry I sprayed the entire pumpkin with gloss polyurethane.

Step 3: Add the Cylinder Vase

the Cylinder vase should fit snuggly through the hole you cut. I purchased 7 1/2″ and 13″ tall pumpkins so the vases fit perfectly.

Step 4: Add the Flowers and Greenery

Because there is a glass vase inside the pumpkins you have the option of adding real flowers or faux. For now I chose faux flowers from Dollar Tree. Because the stems were not long enough, I place floral foam in the vase. I started with large green leafy picks around the outside of the vase. Once that was done I added the floral elements to fill out the vase.

Step 5: Create and add the Bow

I created a bow that I placed on the front of my pumpkins. I always struggled to make a good bow. Then I took the bow making class from Julie at Southern Charm wreaths and it rocked my bow making world. If you would like to learn how to make the perfect bow click this link.

Step 6: Create the Wagon

Take two of the kitchen roll holders and zip tie them together with the round part on each end. Repeat for the second set of holders. Take the small boards and glue them together lengthwise using wood glue and hot glue. On the wrong side of the boards place some wood planks to tie the wood pieces together. Make sure that the wood planks are not in the same place as the wheels will be. I made this mistake and had to use filler to attach the wheels.

Step 8: Paint the Wheels

I decided to give my wheels a rust look. I purchased a rust antiquing process for this purpose. It is a two step process. First you add the metal medium onto the kitchen roll holders and let it dry for an hour. Add a second coat and let it dry for 12 hours. Once that is done the magic happens. Add the rust antiquing solution and wait a few hours. Once it is dry spray it with a matte polyurethane. You can always just spray paint them if you do not want to wait for the process. I would not leave them silver.

Step 9: Paint or Stain the Wood

Once the glue is dry, stain or paint it any color you like. I decided to crackle paint mine. To do this paint the wood with oatmeal chalk paint. Once it dries cover the whole thing with white Elmer’s Glue All. The more glue you put on the larger the crackles do be sure you know whether you want large or small crackles. While it is still tacky cover it with the Java chalk paint. I used a heat gun to dry my paint and glue quickly. Once it is dry, seal it using the polyurethane. Glue the board to the holders using the hot glue and e6000 so that the holders are on each end of the board. Set the pumpkin vase and enjoy.

Step 10: Add the Wood to the Holders

Glue the boards to the holders using the hot glue and e6000 so that the holders are on each end of the board.

Step 11: Add the Handle

I took a 30″ piece of Dollar Tree wired jute cord and glued one end to the left side of the underside of the front of the wheels and wrapped it around. The other side was glued to the right side in the same way. The cord was glued to the end of the wood near the middle. Then the cord was bent to form a handle for the wagon. Place a pumpkin vase on the wagon and enjoy.
