How to Make Simple Fabric Sunflowers

Autumn is just around the corner and one of the things I like to decorate my home with is sunflowers. They always seem to be in my local supermarket in the fall. This year I thought I would make some simple fabric sunflowers to last me the whole season. These fabric sunflowers are super simple to make. they can actually be made in just a little bit of time with minimal sewing. This is a great beginner craft project that is the perfect autumn home decorating project for any home. If you would like more holiday crafts check out my holiday page.

I used scrap fabrics and fat quarters from my stash for this project that I purchased from JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores but you could head to fabrics.com or onlinefabricstore.net to get exactly what you need for your simple fabric sunflowers. This post contains affiliate links that if you click on them and make a purchase I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.

What you will Need

Step 1: Cut out your Fabrics

From the darker fabrics cut a circle that measures 5″ in diameter. From the yellow and white fabrics cut one circle each that measures 8″ in diameter.

Step 2: Stitch the Small Circle to the Larger Circles

Layer the small circle on top of the larger circles so that it is centered. Stitch all the way around the smaller circle leaving a small opening at the bottom for stuffing. You could hand stitch this if you like for a more rustic look. I hand stitched mine.

Step 3: Stuff the Simple Fabric Sunflower

Stuff the flower with polyester fiberfil through the opening you left in the bottom of the flower. Stitch the opening closed.

Step 4: Wash your Simple Fabric Sunflowers

Place your flowers in a mesh laundry bag and wash and dry them so that they begin to fray and look a little ragged. If you don’t have a mesh laundry bag check out my tutorial here on how to make one here.

Step 5: Add the Craft Stick

Wrap the craft stick with green floral tape. Insert the stick into the bottom of the flower. You have now finished your simple sun flower.
