How to Sew a Fun Halloween Trick-or-Treat Bag

I saw this project for sale on the Walmart website and decided I could create it myself. So here is my version of a fun Halloween Trick-or-Treat bag. This is a really fun simple project to make using your basic sewing skills. It is perfect for Trick or Treating with style. There are two different faces you can put on the front of the bag to really show a child’s personality. I have done other Halloween projects on the site and if you want to take a look at them head over to my Holiday Project Vault.

What you will Need: How to Make a Fun Halloween Trick-or-Treat Bag

Step 1: Cut out the Fabrics

From the main bag felt cut two pieces that measure 13″ x 11″, two pieces that measure 5″ x 13″, one piece that measures 5″ x 11″, two pieces that measure 5″ x 3″ and two that measure 11″ x 3″. Using the pattern and Wonder Under, cut out the face of your choice. I have included an SVG for both patterns so if you want to use your Cricut or other cutting machine you can.

Step 2: Create the Face

For the pumpkin witch face I fused the orange pumpkin to the black background. Then I added the eyes nose and mouth. If you are doing the skull face you will need to backstitch embroider the mouth unless you use your Cricut.

Step 3: Add the Face

Take the main face piece and place it on one of the 11″ x 13″ pieces of main fabric. I placed mine in the center of the bag near the bottom. Use Wonder Under to attach the pieces to the bag panel. Stitch the face to the main bag piece. If you are making the pumpkin witch add the straw hair by stitching it on the sides of the pumpkin. You could also glue it if you like. Add the hat using Wonder Under. Stitch. Repeat the process for all other pieces. Trim off any extra straw.

Step 4: Stitch the Bag Together

Start with the main bag piece with the face. Place one of the 13″ x 5 “pieces of felt right sides together with the face piece and stitch along the sides using a 1/4” Seam allowance. Do the same for the other side. Stitch the back of the bag to the two side pieces right sides together. Finally, stitch the bottom of the bag to the tube you have created. To do this, place the bottom right sides together with the sides and stitch. Turn right sides out.

Step 5: Add the Straps

I used ribbon for my straps. You can create your straps out fabric using the traditional method. Fold each piece of ribbon in half. Place the raw edges 1 1/2″ from each side seam and pin so that the strap is right sides together with the bag pieces. Do this for both sides of the bag. Stitch to the bag using a 1/8 seam allowance.

Step 6: Stitch the Placket

Take the 11″ x 3″ and 5″ x 3″ pieces and stitch them together creating a square tube using a 1/4″ seam allowance.

Step 7: Add the Placket

Place the bag inside the placket so that they are right sides together and the straps are sandwiched between the two pieces. Stitch all the way around using a 1/4″ seam allowance. Fold the placket inside the bag. Topstitch all the way around the top to secure. You have now finished your fun Halloween Trick-or-Treat bag.
