How to Sew a Halloween Trick or Treat Basket
I like to get. jump on the holidays early here at Sew Very Crafty so that you can to. I decided to make this terrific Halloween trick or treat basket for Halloween so that you have time to make loads of them for the upcoming holiday. This is a beginner sewing project. Anyone with basic sewing skills can make this project with no trouble at all. There is a pattern piece that does all of the work for you. Because of the 3D look of this basic it seems harder than it is but it is a lot like making my summer hat project but upside down. This little trick or treat basket is fully lined and reusable. It is unbreakable too so how do you make it?
I used some Halloween fabric that I purchased from JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores. I thought to use just plain orange and put a face on it but decided that was too predictable and used this fun halloween print instead. You could always head to Fabric.com or onlinefabricstore.net to get the perfect halloween fabric for your project. - Pattern piece you can get by clicking on this link
- 1/2 yd outer and lining fabric
- 1 yd Pellon SF 101 Interfacing
- Standard sewing supplies
Step 1: Cut The Fabrics
Using the pattern piece cut six outer pieces and six lining pieces of fabric. After cutting off the 1/4″ seam allowance cut six pieces of interfacing. Cut and outer piece that measured 4″ x 13″
Step 2: Fuse the Interfacing
Fuse the interfacing pieces to the center wrong sides of the outer fabric pieces following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Step 3: Stitch the Outer Pieces
Stitch two outer pieces right sides together. Clip the curves and press the seam open. Stitch a third piece to the other two in the same way. Set aside. Stitch the remaining three pieces in the same way you stitched the first three. Place the three pieces right sides together. Stitch one long seam joining the two pieces together. Turn right sides out and set aside.
Step 4: Stitch the Lining
Stitch the lining pieces the same way you stitched the outer pieces. This time leave an opening in one of the sides for turning the basket right sides out in a later step.
Step 5: Create the Handle
Take the 4″ x 13″ piece and fold it in half lengthwise and press. Open the handle and fold the raw edges to meet the fold line and press again. Fold in half lengthwise to enclose the raw edges. Stitch on both sides of the handle to secure.
Step 6: Add the Handles
Place the handle raw edges together with the raw edge of the outer bag on each side and stitch.
Step 7: Add the Lining to the Outer Bag
Place the outer bag inside the lining bag so that they are right sides together and the handle is stuffed inside. Stitch all the way around the top of the basket. Turn the basket right sides out through the opening you left in the lining. Stuff the lining into the outer bag with the handle facing up. Topstitch all the way around the top of the bag for a finished look and to secure the lining. You have now finished you Halloween Trick or Treat Basket.
