How to Make a Boxed Zipper bag

This open wide box zipper bag is a simple sewing project to make even thought it has a zipper. It is a nice size to use for storing a lot of items. You can use for makeup or other trinkets, sewing notions and tools, just about anything. I really enjoyed making this bag and thought to share it with you. I hope that you will give this project a try. It is both fun and functional and another one that I got from Sewing Times on YouTube. I used basic cotton and fusible fleece for this project. I purchased both from JOANN Fabric & Craft Storesbut you could. head to fabric.com or onlinefabricstore.net to get exactly what you =want for your open wide box zipper bag. What you will Need: How to Make an Open Wide Box Zipper Bag

  • 1/2 yd outer and lining fabric
  • 1/2 yd fusible fleece like Pellon 987F
  • 15″ zipper

Step 1: Cut Your Fabrics

From the outer and lining fabric cut two pieces each that measure 14 5/8″ x 10 5/8″. From the outer fabric cut two tab pieces that measure 1 5/8″ x 2″ and a handle piece that measures 3 1/4″ x 6 3/4″. Cut two pieces of fusible fleece that measure 13 7/8″ x 9 7/8″.

Step 2: Fuse the Fleece

Fuse the fleece pieces to the wrong side of the outer fabric pieces using a hot iron and following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Step 3: Add the Zipper

Find the center of the outer fabric and the lining fabric on the long side and mark. Find the center of the zipper and mark. Lay the outer fabric right sides up on your work station and the zipper right sides down on the outer piece. Place the lining piece right sides down on the zipper and pin or clip. Stitch the zipper through all layers. Repeat the process using the other outer and lining pieces. Topstitch along both sides of the zipper.

Step 4: Stitch the Bag Bottoms

Open the zipper. Place the outer pieces right sides together and the lining pieces right sides together. Stitch the outer bottom using a 3/8″ seam allowance. Stitch the lining bottom in the same way but leave an opening for turning the bag.

Step 5: Fold the Bag Sides

Fold the outer bag side’s so that the zipper is in line with the bottom seams. Do the same for the lining as shown. Clip the layers together.

Step 6: Create the Bag Tabs

Fold the long raw edges of the tab pieces to the center and press. Fold in half widthwise and press again. Place the tabs at the end of the zipper aligning the raw edges. Clip.

Step 7: Stitch the Bag Sides

Stitch both sides through all layers using a 3/8″ seam allowance. Turn the bag right sides out. Stitch the opening closed using ladder stitch.

Step 8: Create the Handle

Fold the long raw edges to the center and press. Fold in half lengthwise and press again. Stitch on both sides to secure.

Step 9: Add the Handle

Measure 2 3/8″ on each side of the zipper and make a mark. Stitch on the handles at each short end.

Step 10: Create the Box Corners

Turn the bag wrong sides out. Draw 3″ squares on each corner using an erasable pen. Pinch the corners so that the seams are aligned and there is a straight line across the corner. Do This for each corner. Stitch along the straight line. Turn right sides out.

Step 11: Stitch the corners

Open the bag wide and clip the corners together. Stitch them at the corners so that you are creating pockets at each end of the bag. You have now created your open wide box zipper bag.
