Winter Hat and Scarf
Winter Hat and Scarf
Here is an easy to sew winter hat and scarf. This is one of the few projects that I made from fabric not in my stash. I loved this herringbone pattern. I used knit fabrics for the exterior and the lining. The hat and scarf are the perfect addition to any wardrobe in the cold winter months. I have included the pattern and a complete tutorial with this post and hope that you will give it a try. Share your results with everyone else in the comments section below. What you will Need:
- Pattern
- 7/8 yd outer fabric
- 7/8 yd lining fabric
- 2 7/8″ buttons
- 1 1 1/4″ button
Step 1: Winter Hat
The winter hat only requires two pieces. The hat band is a rectangle that measures 27 x 6. Cut 1 of the outer fabric and 1 of the lining fabric. The other is a trapazoid that measures 12.5″ along the bottom. 12″on one side, 14″ on the other side and 13.5″ along the top. Draw the pattern piece out then place it reversed on the fold along the 14″ side. Cut 1 of the outer fabric and 1 of the lining fabric.
Step 2: Winter Hat
With right sides together sew the back seam together using a 5/8″ seam allowance on both the outer fabric and the inner fabric of the trapzoid piece. Leave an opening in the lining seam for turning.
Step 3: Winter Hat
Pin the wrong side of the hatband to the right side of the lining and baste. Fold the hatband in half lengthwise with right sides together then sew the short ends and clip the corners.
Step 4: Winter Hat
Turn the hatband right side out and baste the raw edges together. On the outside, lap the left side over the right side about 1 3/4″ and hand tack the ends.
Step 5: Winter Hat
Baste the hatband to the hat body.
Step 6: Winter Hat
Sew long stitches around the top at 1/4″ down and 5/8″ down. Pull the strings to gather the top on the wrong side. Hand tack the gathers together and wrap thread around the top. Repeat with lining.
Step 7: Winter Hat
With right sides together push the outer hat into the lining and sew all the way around the rim. Turn through the opening you left in the seam of the lining. Sew the opening closed using mattress stitch. Tuck the lining up into the hat. On right side add the 1 1/4″ button on the flap. You have finished the hat portion of this warm combination.
Step 1: Scarf
Cut 2 outer and lining pieces that measure 14″ x 8 3/4″on the fold as shown in diagram for scarf. Cut 1 outer fabric 16 1/2″ x 4 1/4″ for tab.
Step 2: Scarf
Pin wrong side of one scarf section to the right side of the scarf lining and baste. Repeat with second piece.
Step 3: Scarf
Sew the two pieces together along the long edges. Then with right sides together bring the two shorter sides together and sew leaving an opening for turning. Turn the scarf and sew the opening closed.
Step 4: Scarf
To create the tab fold the tab in half lengthwise. Sew around the piece leaving an opening for turning. Clip the corners then turn the piece right side out. Sew the opening closed.

Step 5: Scarf
Gather the scarf in loose folds then wrap the tab around it to secure the folds in place. Add the two 7/8″ buttons and the scarf is complete.
