Easy Sew Felt Hot Air Balloon Coasters
Easy Sew Felt Hot Air Balloon Coasters
My friend Laura from Little Yellow Wheelbarrow made these beautiful hot air balloon Christmas ornaments and I just love them so I was looking for something to sew in that same vein and I came across these terrific felt coasters designed by Diana Stainton and had to create them for you so that you can make them yourself. These adorable easy sew felt hot air balloon coasters will liven up any decor and are so simple to make. They require only hand sewing so you don’t even need a sewing machine for this project.
You only need a small amount of felt for this project so I would suggest you head to your local fabric store and get some felt squares in the colors that you want. I happened to have these felt squares on hand but you could choose any colors that you want for your balloons.
What you will Need:
- Pattern
- Brown felt square
- white felt squares
- 1 each of the colors you want your balloons to be
- White Embroidery Floss
- Brown Embroidery Floss
- Embroidery needle
- Fabric glue
- Card Stock
Step 1: Easy Sew Hot Air Balloon Coasters
Print out the pattern and trace it onto card stock. There are two pattern pieces. Cut out both pieces from the card stock. Use the card stock as your pattern.
Step 2: Easy Sew Hot Air Balloon Coasters
Trace the main part of the balloon onto the white felt square using an erasable pen. I used a frixion heat erasable pen. Cut out the white balloon pieces. Cut out the basket pieces from the brown felt.
Step 3: Easy Sew Hot Air Balloon Coasters
From your two colored felt pieces for the balloon cut four strips that measure 3/4″ x 4″ of each color.
Step 4: Easy Sew Hot Air Balloon Coasters
Weave the strips together to form a square. Place some fabric glue on the white balloon circle area only. Position the square diagonally on the balloon piece. Cut around the woven square so that it becomes a circle that matches the white balloon shape.
Step 5: Easy Sew Hot Air Balloon Coasters
Place the brown basket piece on the white balloon at the bottom as shown and sew it on using the brown embroidery floss. Use running stitch for this step. When you have finished the running stitches continue upwards toward the circle in a long stitch to emulate the ropes of the balloon.
Step 6: Easy Sew Hot Air Balloon Coasters
Sew the woven piece to the white piece using the white embroidery thread using blanket stitch. If you are not familiar with how to do blanket stitch check out this video. You have now finished the adorable easy sew hot air balloon coasters.
