I am always looking for useful things to make for the kitchen. These Dollar Tree food storage baskets are so cute and are perfect for storing fruit, pastries, towels, anything. They are also so easy to make. You can paint them any colors to match your home's decor. I decided to paint mine for the holidays. St Patrick's Day, Valentine's Day and Easter because why not? I really love how these came out. If you like this project and would like more Dollar Tree crafts head over to our Dollar Tree page. What you will Need: How to Make Dollar Tree Food Storage Baskets
- Dollar Tree Basket
- Dollar Tree stove cover – small
- Pillar candle holder — I actually got mine from Hobby Lobby
- Cabinet knob or make your own as I did
- Spray paint
- White chalk paint
- Acrylic paint
- primer
- 1″ painter's tape
- Glass glue or epoxy
Step 1: Paint the basket and pillar
I used spray paint for the baskets and pillar candles that I made. Because I went with a holiday theme I sprayed them green, orange and red. Let dry completely.

Step 2: Paint the stove covers
I used a variety of techniques to paint the stove covers. I started with buffalo check for my Easter basket. This is not as hard as it seems. Tape and paint is all you need for this. I started with some clear primer before adding the paint. You could use white primer but I had clear on hand. Cover the whole stove cover with the primer. Once the primer is dry cover the whole stove cover with white paint. Let dry completely.

Using the 1″ tape start taping the cover by using a spacer piece and separating the tape pieces so they are 1″ apart. Paint a light tone of the color you have chosen to paint stripes between the tape. Let dry completely. Remove the tape. Once the paint has completely dried tape the cover in stripes going in the opposite direction and paint between the lines using the same color. This time leave the tape on. Let dry completely.

Tape across the original lines you taped leaving just squares. Paint the squares in a darker version of the color you have chosen. Let dry and remove the tape. Your Buffalo check is now finished.

Next, I used decoupage to create a plaid look. Plaid is different than buffalo check so I decided to use some plaid paper for this process. Start by placing Mod Podge all over the stove cover. Let it dry completely. Place the paper on top pf the stove cover and top it with some parchment paper. Using a small iron heat the parchment paper so that the Mod Podge fuses the paper to the stove cover. Remove any excess paper using a craft knife or sanding block. Cover with dishwasher safe Mod Podge.

Finally, I used a stencil to add some hearts to my Valentine stove cover. Start by waiting the cover white. Use a stencil with multiple sizes of hearts and stencil the hearts using pink and red paint. I adhered the stencil to the stove cover using stencil adhesive.

Step 3: Glue the Basket to the pillar
In order to adhere the basket to the pillar use either glass glue or epoxy. You can add a bit of hot glue to keep it stable while the other glue is drying.

Step 4: Create the Handle
For this you can use a cabinet knob or you can create your own handles. I decided to create my own using wood cutouts. For the hearts and the bunnies I simply hot glued five cutouts to each other to create one big cutout. I filled the holes with some spackle. Once the spackle has cured, paint the handle to match your basket.

Step 5: Attach the Handle
I used a combination of hot glue and epoxy to attach the handles to the top of the stove covers. Place the handle in the center of the stove cover and place the stove cover on top of the basket and you have finished your Dollar Tree Food Basket.
